50 years ago today @ 12 noon, two 'kids' were married in the hometown of Ella Mae Selos, Carthage, NY in Saint James Church with reception to follow @ the Rod & Gun Club…
We met for the first time on a blind date arranged by my friend & eventual best man, Dick..
I picked her up @ her apartment that she shared with 2 other girls on the west side of Syracuse...We went to a local pub, the Poor House West where the pitchers of beer flowed & peanuts shells crunched under your chair whenever you adjusted yourself or tried but failed to be inconspicuous while crossing the floor for that much needed restroom stop, oh did I mention the beer flowed...At that time I was somewhat of an introvert & struggled with keeping the conversation flowing…After our time together ended I drove her back to her apartment...I really liked her and called her a day later & asked for another date...In true EM fashion she was never one to sugar coat anything for effect, she says she had to do laundry because she had recently returned from visiting her brother in Denver...Well I thought for sure that was a pretty lame excuse for not wanting to continue this relationship…But no, this was what I was later to discover & love about EM…She was a country girl who had limited finances & thus did not have a closet filled with unlimited wardrobe choices...She came from a hard working dairy farm family where you never wasted anything or purchased anything on credit, you paid cash & then for only what you needed, not wanted...So after that conversation I decided I had to give it one last ditch effort & ask her again for a date…Well as anyone who knows who Gomer is from a 60’s tv show who was always known to say ‘Surprise..Surprise…she said yes & we were married a year later…We were two opposites, City boy & Country girl only God could have arranged this & made it endure for 50 years!…
I could go on for days describing our life together but let me end with these final thoughts, while of course we had our pain & struggles they will never define the joy we have shared…
The adoption of our Daughter, Lindsay, the birth of our grandchildren, CJ, Daniele, Aden. Addison & our great grandchild Brynlee..I give thanks each day for all…
My cousin Anthony always addresses EM as ‘Saint Ella Mae’…It always makes me laugh, but that is a truth that defines Ella Mae…Only she could have been my lover, friend, cheerleader & hand I could always reach out for & know that it would be there…I pray that as we continue this journey together that I would never take her unconditional love for granted & always acknowledge her wisdom…Thanks to all who actually stayed with the reading of this long post…I promise I won’t do this again until our 75th…
My prayer: Dear Lord thank you for your grace, overflowing blessings & unconditional love…Thank you for placing Ella Mae in my life…I commit to be a man of faith & humility
& to never forget that you are in control…Thank you that even for all your majesty you care deeply about a country girl & city boy & have walked with us during our journey as man & wife all these many years…I pray all in the name of Jesus, the name above all names…Amen…
