For those of you who are to young to remember the comedian Jackie Gleason, he coined the phrase that is the title of this post....He would say it on his TV show after his monologue to get things going...... So Lets get this next adventure going....'And away we go!'.....
As I have mentioned, I began my new job on Monday May 15th, 2 days after my last day @ the fraternity....I am now a dining room cashier @ Cazenovia College, pretty impressive huh?...Haha ....No really, this is the perfect position for someone like me that needs & wants to work but can no longer deal with the physical demands required when cooking, especially for a bunch of young guys....No more making weekly menus, ordering, prepping, cooking, cleaning & all the mental stress of it all....I am approaching this job as my last opportunity to stay relevant and hopefully be a positive influence on all who I encounter.....
I will after all be the first person they will see when coming into the dining room for 2 of their meals a day (I am here for breakfast & lunch)....As this blog progresses I will share the goings on of the controlled chaos of the dinning hall....I will never share any info that is deemed a private conversation or put anyone down, period.....I will write about my observations & goings on & always keep the names confidential when appropriate....
I have now been here for 2 months & am beginning to feel more relaxed & confident with my coworkers & the position...It's not rocket science but when there is a back up of folks entering the dinning room I get a little nervous because I don't want to make them wait.... For everyone that enters I have to either swipe their meal card, or collect cash....Gee that probably doesn't seem to complicated, but the rub comes when you have to switch from employee meal, staff that pay with a debit card loaded with Caz cash, guests & staff that pay cash & now, summer college students & summer college room attendants & mentors & yes something called dinning dollars that some folks use....Then when the fall semester begins there will be a 1000 bodies to get in here as quickly & correctly as possible....With all that being said I feel my main job is to always be as cordial & upbeat as I can with all.... Oh & less I forget, I also control the music that is being played....I have several play lists which I can use to change up the mood in the room depending on whether the crowd is mostly students, workers, staff or a mix of all....
If possible I try to greet 'folks' by their first name...That can be a challenge, but I do try as best I can....So here are a few that I can nail up to now: Anthony, Jeff x 3, Hannah, Patrice, Lyndsay, Jamie, Pam, Joe, Mic, Tim x 2, Jay, Dan, Alan, Christian, Cindy x 2, Wendy, Hugh, Ty, Eric, Shawn, Rich, Sharon. Sheila, Sarah, Michele, Kaylyn, Heather, Lisa, Jen, Tina, Lori, Betsy, Brittany, Stephanie Dave, John, Michael, Mark & Sue....
The dinning staff consists: Teresa, Tom, Aladdin, Penny, Jeff, Lisa, Joe, Sue, Linda, Elaine, Kay, Paul, Elizabeth, Dan, Chelsea, William, Everett, Nate, Brianna & lots more who will be the working students in the fall....
I saved the mention of another coworker/supervisor for last, because she is kind & compassionate, hard working, funny & God fearing...Her smile & laugh are genuine & something to behold...She has a gift for providing exceptional customer service for all....I say these things about her because they are true....I am not looking for 'brownie points' or any special treatment, I am way beyond that @ my age & I am certainly not looking to climb the corporate ladder....Being on the lower rung is right where I want to be @ this stage of my life....So with that said I can now tell you I consider her a friend & a special one for sure...After a few weeks or maybe days I found out that she has her own business...Now anyone who knows me, especially my wife, will know I get very excited when I hear someone is an entrepreneur....Tina makes salsa from her own specifications & recipe...Please go to primoandmarys.com & check it out, also like her on Facebook @ Primo & Mary's Salsa....Better yet get out & try some, it is sold @ many stores & specialty shoppes listed on the web site....I am sure I will be sharing lots more about Tina & her Primo & Mary's Salsa venture, so please stay tuned...
My leg pain from the spinal stenosis I have, has increased greatly & I am growing a little fearful of where this is heading....I want to keep working & contributing....
Next time I will get into some of the actual stuff of this Caz dinning hall adventure....
If you are a prayer warrior, prayers for healing according to God's will are much wanted & appreciated.... Thanks & God's blessings to all....
